SLEEPING MATS FOR REFUGEES-STITCHING HEARTS WORLDWIDE 200+ SERVICE HOURS
Our 12th grade students partnered with Stitching Hearts Worldwide to make plastic sleeping mats for volcano victims, fire survivors and those displaced from their homes. Currently the greatest need is in Ukraine. These mats keep someone 40 degrees warmer by protecting them from the ground. They are easy to clean, lightweight and provide an answer for plastic waste. Each mat is rolled over a stuffed pillow with a crocheted handle for easy transport. The pillows are filled with cut up plastic bags, the mats are weaved with plastic bags and the handles are crocheted with plastic bags. To get involved, contact: www.stichingheartsww.org/waystohelp

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP 290+ SERVICE HOURS
For more than ten years APA 8th grade students have found “Wonderful Opportunities to Render Kindness” at their fall W.O.R.K. party. These community organizations look forward to having our students service each year due to their positive attitude and willingness to jump in and do whatever is needed. This year, they made an impact in cemeteries, parks, and community buildings like YMCA. They put on their gloves, grabbed rakes and shovels to plant flowers, repair fences and pick up trash. They laughed and had fun with their fellow classmates as they exemplified the APA motto to “Be a builder!”
10th Grade
SERVICE CHALLENGE 400+ LOGGED
10th grade students have a two hour service challenge during each quarter of the school year. This fall, it is the “Friends and Family” challenge. Students are asked to find ways to serve their friends and family outside of their regularly assigned family responsibilities. The goal is to become aware of what’s happening around you and look for ways to help others whenever possible. Being observant is a key to success and service is a key to happiness. If you wonder why our 10th graders are extra smiley this month, it may be because they have happy hearts finding ways to serve.

USBE Special Needs Scholarship Opportunity
School districts and Charter schools are required by Utah Law, 53A1a-704(10), to inform parents of students with IEPs enrolled in public schools, of the availability of a scholarship to attend a private school through the Carson Smith Scholarship Program. The Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship Program (CSS) provides tuition assistance for those who would qualify for special education and related services in public schools, preschool eligible special needs students enrolled in ineligible private schools. The scholarship is for students through 12th grade (3-21 year of age), whose parents choose an eligible private school. SISTEMA NOTES
Our secondary orchestra and band ensembles were excited to be part of a virtual project launch that happened this past Thursday, September 29th. They had the privilege of performing a piece that was written just for them titled “Without Doubt” by Madeline Myers. They were one of four El Sistema-inspired organizations from the USA that had been chosen to be a part of this incredible project. Well done students!
Please check your student’s Alma regularly. We are approaching the end of this semester very soon which means that we will have our FIRST “NO MISSING HOMEWORK” incentive. Every Sistema student will earn a ticket to our special event if they have NO MISSING DAYTIME HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS when Mrs. Christensen pulls missing work reports on Friday, October 7th. Our incentive will be Monday, September 10th at 4 p.m. We hope to see MANY of our Sistema students at our incentive!
The next big event will also happen that week. Our FIRST BACH BUCK STORE! Please send your child with the Bach Bucks to school on Wednesday, October 12th. We will be counting Bach Bucks this day so that each student can receive their special ticket to go shopping at the Bach Buck store the following day.
Thank you so much for supporting our program!
